<a href="http://botany.org/Carnivorous_Plants/Sarracenia_psittacina.php">parrot pitcher plant</a></div>
<br />
Our native pitcher plant bog is really putting on a show right now!
When the native habitat was first described in this area it was said that you could walk from
New Orleans to Pensacola and never leave a pitcher plant bog. What a
beautiful sight this must of been. The unique habitat surrounding our
property is associated with the long leaf pine forest. The long leaf
pine forest used to be over 90 million acres running along the gulf
coast from near New Orleans through Mississippi, Alabama, Florida,
Georgia and eventually ending in the Carolinas. Now sadly it is
reported that only 3% of the original forest still remains while only 1%
is managed properly with frequent prescribed burning. The long leaf
pine evolved to become the dominant tree in the forest through fire.
The long pine can survive fire when many other plants may not. All of
these unique plants have taken on the same characteristic and depend on
fire to give them a competitive advantage over other plants!<br />

State in fall of 2011 when he was assigned to be my “Turf Buddy”, an idea
proposed by legendary professor Dr. Barry Stewart that paired new students with
upperclassmen to help introduce them to the turfgrass management world. I met
Stephen Miles while working the 2013 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship at the
Country Club of Birmingham, and later met Jeremy Stevens at the 2013
Mississippi Turfgrass Association social event in Starkville. As faith would have
it I ended up working under all of them during the summer and fall of 2015
while on my eight month internship at The Preserve Golf Club.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><o:p></o:p></div>

Preserve experience got off to a rocky start when I forgot my Social Security
card to use as a form of identification to go with my pre-hire paperwork, and
also, due to a still unknown injury to my big toe, I was barely able to walk.
The week progressively got better as the swelling in my toe steadily decreased.
The first few weeks at The Preserve was a lot of grunt work: walk mowing
greens, raking bunkers, flymowing, buffalo blowing, and I’m pretty sure I
pushed a fertilizer spreader about 800 miles. As the summer went on I had the
opportunity to operate more and more equipment: tractors, triplex, fairway
mowers, etc. I found a strong interest in mowing the step-cut and back lawn
once or twice a week ;however, the older model triplex did not come with a cup
holder, so I had to make one with cardboard and duct tape. By the end of the
summer I had operated every piece of golf course maintenance equipment.</span></div>

weekly routine of mowing, spraying greens, and topdressing. Around the second
week of September we began preparing for a busy couple of weeks in October with
the coming of Golfweek writers, a golf course photographer, and the Deep South
Turf Expo golf outing. I was assigned to help re-sod a struggling tee-box known
to hold water and have shade issues when I suggested the idea of just
renovating it entirely. A small discussion by the people in charge later and we
began ripping up the old sod. I got to experience firsthand all the steps to
tee-box renovation, which was a great experience for me. In addition to this
project, I had the opportunity to do things like collect soil samples for
testing, aerification, fertilization, pesticide application, and irrigation
repair. There were also days where I was left in charge to make the schedule
and run the crew, which was a good management experience. I also became the
last Preserve intern to ever be tortured via Nemacure application. In addition,
I got hands-on experience working with the Precision Air system under our
greens.</span></div>

This has been the first spring in which we are breaking in our new greens and bunkers! The greens have performed wonderfully! Their performance has improved steadily from week to week with the return of good growing conditions. The warm weather has allowed our staff to regularly groom, manicure and grow our new Tifeagle greens to achieve a more dense and smooth surface that a fully mature ultradwarf putting green provides. For the first time in our nearly 10 year history I can honestly say our golf course is thriving in most all aspects of conditioning and playability. In order for bermudagrass to provide consistent championship quality playing conditions to our members and guests, we must manage under four basic L.A.W.S. of nature. These L.A.W.S. govern that we must have:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2013/10/fall-happenings-around-course.html">Light</a> in high abundance and quality.</div>
<div>
<a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2012-01-01T00:00:00-06:00&updated-max=2013-01-01T00:00:00-06:00&max-results=16">Air</a> in an adequate supply in the soil and an abundance of movement along the surface.</div>
<div>
<a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2013/11/we-have-found-better-water.html">Water</a> of high quality and in the right quantity. </div>
<div>
<a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2014/05/greens-mix-production.html">Soil</a> of high quality that supplies the right amounts of water, air and drainage. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have focused on improving these basic elements with our renovation projects over the last year and are now beginning to see the results. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This spring you've probably noticed a few areas of poor coverage that we normally do not have around the course. These areas can be attributed to one or a combination of a few things listed below:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- New sod from last year's renovation that was not fully established going into the winter;</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- Pre-emergent burn from a non-uniform application;</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
- Traffic from construction/cart traffic;</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Shade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All of these areas are filling in now that summer is rapidly approaching. One of the most sensitive areas on the course is the severely shaded areas in 9 approach and along the left side of the hole. This area does not have adequate light and water from the competition of the large oak trees while the approach tends to stay wet due to low light during the winter. These factors add up to an area that is constantly under stress year round. So please do your part to help our team keep our goal of 100% turf coverage and keep your cart out of the sensitive areas. This saves our club a considerable amount of <a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2012/11/new-sod-installation.html">time and money</a> by reducing the odds of needing to purchase sod for this area in the future. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
One last trend that has happened three times since we reopened is golfers taking divots out of our greens. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc94qo9pFmiGHgth_R99eI1Uy-U8F_cThYdO6hu9vuLJgmexainEBuY1UNPKyXRi2ahzeddZ1RC50oWkodPeUSEOdSQkQokRuvTqXYKyHWdGq4QFnlzF4m9yGsWK9V8HzzrwX76pvAJQE/s640/blogger-image-1289121121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc94qo9pFmiGHgth_R99eI1Uy-U8F_cThYdO6hu9vuLJgmexainEBuY1UNPKyXRi2ahzeddZ1RC50oWkodPeUSEOdSQkQokRuvTqXYKyHWdGq4QFnlzF4m9yGsWK9V8HzzrwX76pvAJQE/s640/blogger-image-1289121121.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This is very poor etiquette and is very concerning. We want to do everything we can to protect our beautiful greens so please do not hit your ball from these areas out of frustration. If your ball does come to rest on a green requiring a wedge shot to another hole please simply take a drop. If you see anyone doing this or notice it done on a green as you play please report it to our pro shop immediately. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Thanks and I hope to see you on the course soon!</div>

It has been a very busy summer here at The Preserve and we are excited to be near the end of our renovation! I could not be more proud of our Agronomy Team. These guys and gals worked 1000's of additional hours this past summer successfully growing in our new putting surfaces, installing several 1,000 feet of new drain lines, topdressing the course with over 8,000 tons of sand and the list goes on and on. All this while still keeping up with regular maintenance practices around the rest of the course. Their dedication to the task at hand was crucial in making this project a success and I greatly appreciate all the work they have done.<br />
<br />

</tbody></table>
<br />
During this renovation our Agronomy Team, <a href="http://www.jerrypate.com/design/">Jerry Pate Design</a> and <a href="http://www.tdigolf.com/">TDI Golf</a> collaborated to correct several issues related to the infrastructure of our putting greens by completely rebuilding them from the ground up. The turfgrass variety chosen for our putting surface is <a href="http://www.tifeagle.com/">Tifeagle</a> and for our collars <a href="http://www.tifgrand.com/">Tifgrand</a>. As of October 1st our oldest greens (1,2,4,5 and 10-18) will be 83 days
old, our 2nd set of greens (6-9 and putting green) will be 63 days old and 3 green will
be 42 days old. The first and second set of greens that were planted have comparable green speeds already and this will only improve with age. Green 3 is only 42 days old so it will be slower compared to the rest of the course but what an awesome job our team did to get this green ready for play with the opening of the course. Our team will pay close attention to 3 green since it will require more frequent water applications through the fall due it's young age. During this time there may be times our staff needs to water the putting surface during the day. If you come to a green and a team member is watering with the flag pulled please wait patiently while he finishes the water application. It will only take a few moments and it is imperative that they have the right of way to ensure our new greens have a healthy transition into the winter months.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">3 Green ready for play!</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
While working on our putting surfaces we took the opportunity to replace the degraded lining system and sand in our bunkers. The old fabric liner was replaced with <a href="http://www.capillaryconcrete.com/">Capillary Concrete</a> and a new sand called <a href="http://www.golfagronomics.com/g-angle/">Gangle</a> was installed. The combination of these two products will provide a more consistent playing experience for those who prefer to play their ball from our hazards. All major construction has been completed on the bunkers but our team is still making there way around the course checking and finalizing the sand depths for ideal playability. Other projects completed include laser leveling of all tee boxes, enlarging several tees on holes 1 and 2, re-decking the bridge on hole 12 and building a new bulkhead for 3 green. <br />
<br />
You may notice recently sodded areas around the course that were part of the final punch list our contractor completed at the end of the project this past week. Please try not to drive your cart in these areas and play your ball as ground under repair if it comes to rest on the new sod. <br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy the new golfing experience here at The Preserve and welcome back!<br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">This past winter we selected trees for removal that were casting shade on our bermudagrass putting surfaces. During this process we also <a href="http://gsr.lib.msu.edu/article/vavrek-value-2-21-2014.pdf">surveyed</a> all trees and shrubs that were growing in our tree lines making note of their species, light requirement, current size, annual growth rate, mature height/width and expected lifespan so that we could manage these areas to reach their full potential for long term sustainability. With this information we selected the highest quality specimen trees to remain while removing fast growing weak wooded trash trees with a short lifespan like Water Oak (quercus nigra) and Sweetgum (liquidamber styracifolia). Small tree saplings were also removed that were spaced to tightly and growing into the larger specimen trees. </span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">These immature trees weaken the structural integrity of our selected specimen trees by forcing abnormal growth angles as the tree reaches for light in competion with other plants. These abnormal growth angles exposes the tree to an increased risk failure under high wind events that frequently occur in our area. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">The removal of the smaller tree saplings allow for the larger specimen trees to grow stronger for a longer lifespan while becoming more visible so that it's individual beauty may be appreciated at our facility for years to come. Once the selected trees were removed shrubs were evaluated for their value and contribution for seperation and beauty to our landscape. Any shrub that was deemed low quality or could not perform based on site specific circumstances were removed and a mix of native shrubbery and grasses were transplanted along with the installation of nursery grown plants in areas where immediate screening was necessary.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">We must manage our landscape as it matures and grows because since man settled this area he has gotten in the way of Mother Nature's management plan. Mother Nature, if given time, will eventually select the strongest specimen plant for us by thinning the forest through catastrophic wind events that frequent our area. By managing our forest now we minimize damage and clean up cost in the future and provide a much more consistently sustainable habitat.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">This week we completed our new irrigation well installation and it is now up and running. This current well is pulling around 300 gallons per minute. This is half the amount of water our old well could provide. We will monitor the aquafier for the next few weeks with the hope that it will be able to support another well in the future. </span></div>

What does this mean for our facility and why is it important? It is important because "as your water so goes your soil". This is a greatly improved water source that will have a very positive effect on plant health and course conditioning for years to come. The new water will have improved water infiltration while eliminating the toxic ion sodium as a hazard for our facility. This results in improved soil/water infiltration, less disease and improved rooting for our turfgrass ecosystem. Plants thrive when their need for four basic elements are met. Good water, good soil, adequate air and light. If any of these elements are lacking a reduction in plant health will occur. With this new source we have positively impacted 2 (water and soil) of the four elements. Below is a highlighted comparison of test results from our old irrigation source versus our new. </div>

<a href="http:/"></a><br />
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Following up from a previous post from a few months back titled<a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2013/07/looking-for-better-water.html"> "Looking for Better Water"</a> to let you know we have found better water! This is great news and it will have a significant impact on reducing expenditures used treat our water and soil to combat the detrimental impact sodium has had on our soil structure and infiltration rates. This irrigation source comes from an aquifer located at around the 400 ft depth. This source typically contains around 150 ppm of sodium with a Sodium Adsorption Ratio of 30. These two factors combined with the relative purity of our water resulted in an extreme reduction in soil water infiltration rates. To see the irrigation suitability report from a sample taken in May of 2013 click <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/9d0pk22gh0783ww/May%202013.pdf">here</a>. The report identified as "well" is our current source while the latter tests are taken from around the course after being treated with a gypsum product. Notice the substantial improvement from the "well" test with regards to sodium, SAR and potential for reduced infiltration compared to the "lake" test.<br />
<br />
Our new water source comes from the 80-90 ft aquifer and is classified as an ultra pure water source with very little sodium. This water source still requires treatment with gypsum to maintain adequate calcium and salinity levels but the toxic sodium ion will no longer be a concern. This new water source will allow us to dramatically reduce the amount of gypsum applied to the course on an annual basis. Click <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/dxeogfm8tt95rj6/Test%20well%20of%2090%20ft%20Aquafier.pdf">here</a> to view a copy of the irrigation suitability report for the sample taken from the shallow aquifer.<br />
<br />
If you compare the "well" test to the new well you will notice a significant reduction of sodium in the water and also the potential for reduced water infiltration is greatly improved.<br />
<br />
With the results of the test Lyman Well Company has begun installing our new well behind 6 green. We tried to install our newest well closer to our existing infrastructure near 6 tee box but unfortunately there was only enough water for less than 70 gpm of water. The next location we tried was behind 6 green. This location had a much cleaner sand at the 80 ft depth which allowed for a better performing well. We hope it will provide close to 300 gpm of water . Once this well is functional it will be allowed to run for 24 hours while monitoring the water level at our test well on hole 7. If the new well does not draw down the water level at our test well, another 300 gpm well will be installed on hole 7. Once these two wells are constructed our current well will be used for emergencies only.</div>

This is a busy and exciting time of year for our Agronomic Team! We have numerous projects underway around the course. We are in in the process of removing several trees around the course to improve sunlight quality on several of our putting green complexes. The tree removals were based on recommendations derived from a shade study performed by <a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2013/07/shade-study-with-arborcom-technology.html">Arborcom</a> earlier this year. This study ensures we are removing the specific trees that are robbing our turfgrass of the valuable energy sunlight provides for turfgrass to reach its full potential of health and playability. Recent research has shown that bermudagrass greens require a minimal <a href="http://www2.gcsaa.org/GCM/2004/aug04/pdf/augTechsunlight.pdf">32.6 moles of light per month for peak performance.</a><br />
<br />
With this latest information from research and the state of the art technology provided by Arborcom we are able to make precise decisions for the selection of trees to be removed. Once the trees have been removed smaller shrubs and native grass will be added to reflect the unique native long leaf pine habitat of our area. Below are two videos showing the shade impact in 3D animation on 5 green prior to and after removal during the month of November.<br />

Greens Renovation 2014<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
I am happy to announce we will perform a complete rebuild of our putting surfaces from May 5th to September 9th 2014. This rebuild will correct several persistent <a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2013/06/chipping-green-renovation-2013.html">challenges</a> that have been discussed in a previous blog post related to a low quality sand being used in the construction of our greens combined with the use of a <a href="http://preservegolfclubagronomy.blogspot.com/2011/03/irrigation-water-treatment-with-fgd.html">sodic irrigation water</a> source. Our agronomic team has been working diligently to over come these issues the last several years but you can only be as good as your foundation. The rebuild also provides an opportunity to convert from the older TifDwarf variety to the newer "ultradwarf " TifEagle bermudagrass. TifEagle has a proven track record in our area of providing an exceptional high quality putting surface. While our new greens are being constructed we will also replace the old liners and sand in our bunkers, laser level all tee complexes along with numerous other projects around the course to help us continue "raising the bar". Our greens are in great shape presently and we plan to seed our greens with a bentgrass/poa triv mix this fall to ensure a high quality putting experience throughout the upcoming winter and spring season.<br />
<br />
Sincerely, <br />

This week we sprayed out our seashore paspalum chipping green, the surrounds and number 1 pro tee with 2 qt/acre Round Up and 24 oz/acre of fusilade II. Over the next few weeks you will notice the slow transition to a dormant brown (death) color. This is in preparation for converting our playing surfaces in this area to Tifeagle on the green and Tifgrand in the surrounds. We will be checking our old mix, gravel layer, sub base and drainage that may have been a contributing factor for poor turf quality in localized areas since construction. This project is a test run for our upcoming greens renovation during the summer of 2014. While we are in the area we are also going to expand the number 1 pro tee to provide additional length to the hole.<br />

A saturated root zone mix is a sign of fines clogging the internal pore space at the sand/gravel interface. USGA greens must be built with a clean sand that meets specifications for size, shape and other factors. After seeing the saturation of our sand we performed a test on the sand to see if it was possibly a dirty sand (contaminated with clay). Below is a photo of our original greens mix along side our current topdressing mix. Notice that after 10 minutes of being allowed to settle the water in the original mix is a deep orange color but our topdressing mix is virtually clear.<br />

While renovating the chipping green we are also doing our teaching green and nursery green. Fortunately both of these greens were built with different mixes so we have been able to see and compare the performance and impact of the different mixes used during construction.<br />

The teaching green was constructed with a sand/profile blend from another facility and the nursery was built with a straight sand mix. You can see how much clearer the water is after 10 minutes of settling compared to our original greens mix in the middle.<br />

This week we performed a Drill n Fill aerification on our greens. This machine is able to drill into the green to an 8" depth and fill the hole with new material all in one step. The process is not perfect but the majority of the holes are filled by the sand ensuring a nice clean channel of new sand that will promote a drier/healthier putting surface.<br />

<br />
Today Coast Water is drilling a test well to approximately the 260 ft depth looking for better quality irrigation water. Our current water source comes from a depth of 400 ft and generally anything lower in our area is worse for irrigation suitability. I am hoping we will find a water with more calcium and magnesium to help offset the sodium in our current water source<br />

A shade study is scheduled to be performed by <a href="http://www.arborcom.ca/">Arborcom Technology</a> around several of our greens complexes. This will be an ongoing process over the next couple of weeks. This study will provide valuable information on the quality of light on each hole. Bermudagrass putting greens require a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight per day on a year round basis. As our facility ages tree management is becoming more of an issue. This shade study will provide our facility a plan for managing trees and underbrush surrounding our putting surfaces now and in the future.<br />

We recently relocated our blue bird houses out on the course. Previously we located the houses on trees with in a forested habitat. These boxes were rarely used so we went back to research why. We discovered that <a href="http://www.sialis.org/index.html">Blue Birds</a> prefer grassy open areas for nesting sites. We relocated our houses around a 6 weeks ago and we already have activity in all of our houses!<br />

We recently have removed the overgrown unsightly brush to the left of 9 green. Over the last few weeks we have added some new native plant material that will be a welcome addition to this beautiful hole. The plants we have selected will provide seasonal color during the spring, summer and fall seasons! The plants that have been planted in this area are Red Maple (acer rubrum), Sweetbay Magnolia (magnolia virginia), Wax Myrtle (myrica heterophlla), Florida Flame Azalea 'Escatawpa' (rhododendron austrinum 'escatawpa') and Muhly (muhlenbergia capillaris)<br />
<br />
The newest addition to our facility is the Florida Azalea. This variety was actually selected from the escatawpa river basin just a few miles away. This plant has orange/yellow blooms that resemble honeysuckle during the month of April. The flowers are very fragrant and they will attract humming birds and butterflies!<br />

Yes it is already that time of year for our spring preemerge application. This year we are applying a 30-0-15 fertilizer impregnated with oxadiazon. Our fertilizer is made up of a 100% control release nitrogen and 50% control release potassium. Oxadiazon is our preemerge of choice for the spring growing season because it does not inhibit root growth like other available products. If you play golf early this week you may notice some small green prills on our fairways and tees but it will soon be gone as it works into the turfgrass canopy.<br />

Over the past week we have planted long leaf pine seedlings around the golf course. Long leaf pine is the tree that dominated the gulf coast region for thousands of years prior to this area being settled. Prior to settlement the long leaf pine forrest was over 90 million acres and was one of the most biologically diverse habitats in the northern hemisphere. This unique and beautiful habitat has been reduced to approximately 2% of its peak acreage so anything we can do to promote our native habitat is very beneficial. If you see a small tuft of what looks like a clump of grass in our straw areas that is the seedling of the long leaf pine waiting for warmer weather to grow!<br />

<br />
This winter we are focusing our attention on 9 green. We are removing trees and brush that have a negative impact on growing conditions in the area. Turfgrass requires adequate amounts of air and sunlight to remain healthy and these two factors have been limited in this location. Trees located to the south of 9 that shade the green have been removed. The dense understory to the left of the green has been thinned while the brush behind the green has been removed completely. This project will improve the growing and playing conditions of this area. <br />
